Just make sure you make copies of the backups every 19 years

Hehe.. It was found out in Denmark. When some 20 year old cd's were found half gone. Bummer, as that was the only copy of that media left

i'll buy a printer, copy the cd's to a hdd, and print them.... then i'll store the papers in vacuum and away from the sun, yet in a dry place.
with several guard-hamsters to chew up anyone (beside me or invited guests) that venture into the vault... yarr..

depends on the type of grinding noise. but try listening to both components to see where it is. if it's teh PS, try this: get your vacuum out with the tube attachment thingy. turn it on and stick it up to the PS's fan, making it spin really fast, and suck that dust out of there. then see what happens.
i don't know why, but that has worked for me before. and it's not the dust, apparently, but i don't know what it is.

I'll try that, Garrett, thanks. If I vacuum the computer, it's usually just the cards and such. I'll maybe see about taking the other fan apart. It could be coming from there, too.

well, i didn't mean take it apart. that might not be advisable, as it is a power supply.
just stick the vacuum up to the back of the computer.

No, there's a fan in the power supply and one in the case. I'll take the case fan apart, not the power supply fan. *lol* I'd probably blow up the house if I tried to play with the power supply.

hmm i went through it just fine, peg.. so..
but i'm buying a new one, as i said. the sound of a lose cable gets very irritating, especially since there are no lose cables around the fan...
funny thing is, you only hear that noise when my brother is at the computer
a sign..?

*lol* I had a dozen different images and thoughts all crowd into my head at the thought of the noises and your brother. If I was a piano player, they'd call it a train wreck.
However...
Mine sounds more like.... like an old-fashioned crank hand mixer. I'm assuming it's the fan that's making the noises. It doesn't happen all the time. I had a whole week without noises and then it came back this morning when I started up the computer. <sigh>

could it be the fan itself that is a little unstable? i tried spinning the fan a bit when i had it open, and it sort of made a similar plastic sound. i dunno.. i'm buying a new one, that way i'll know it ought to work (and if it ain't, i'll just have it swapped).

maybe i wasn't clear. when i said PS, i meant power supply. i've had the power supply make weird noises, but never a case fan. still, it's probably not necessary to disassemble any fan.
