Do you need them running both at the same time or do you want to choose which operating system to go to at startup?

It you want to run them side by side you need to install one of the operating systems on the physical computer then install a virtual machine such as VMWare. After that install the second OS on the virtual machine. If you want to run XP on Windows 7, so long as you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate you can run something called Windows XP Mode which is free from Microsoft.

If you want to choose the "Dual Boot" option then install one OS then open the Disk utility function. Shrink the main drive and format the unused partition as NTFS. Then install the OS on the other partition. Once installed you should get a screen apear at startup asking which operating system to boot to.

Hope this helps.

If you want to install both operating systems, I recommend to you:
1 Make a Hard Drive partition: the new partition has to have at least 20 Gb of free space 2 you can use a free software called EASEUS Partition Master
3Then boot your PC from the Windows XP installation CD
4 Install Windows XP in the new partition you just created

Never knew this is possible with the help of a "virtual box" software.

there are 2 types:
virtualbox, or two real separate OS in your HDD..
i prefer the second because it is separated from your primary OS thus no interference will happen each other

Make backup your existing file, Ensure that you have the installation disks for whatever operating systems you want to install, Check the disk allocation (if there is a one partition, then create room for two OS).

Install the 1st operating system to the first partition and then Install the other operating system on the second partition. Details in http://www.techyv.com/questions/how-...-same-computer

If necessary, configure the boot loader.
Test the dual-boot configuration.
