Updatable Sites in Practice

Hello all...

I am in the process of slowly trying to start making websites for small businesses...I'm still getting a handle on elements of how that sort of business works however. One thing I'm still trying to figure out is how best to set things up for a client to be able to easily update the site once I have completed it.

For example, I am currently working on a site for a small church; they want to have a news page and a photo archive which they can easily add to. Everything else will be more or less static.

This seems overkill for an entire CMS (spent a few days trying to learn Drupal for the purpose and it gave me a hell of a headache, especially given that I already have a layout coded up and transferring it was driving me nuts) so I was wondering what the general good practice was here.

Can one just provide a couple of PHP scripts for the major regular updates and just show them how to update files if they need to make changes to the rest of the content ("click here, here, here, here and then just don't change anything in angle brackets!")? Or is that an unprofessional way of going about it? What's generally done in this sort of situation?
