web 2.0 is about user provided content and interaction - but you don't necessarily need it to get big traffic

The function of a web 2.0 website is not necessarily to send traffic to your website. This just one type of model for a web 2.0 website, and many others are simply based on user contributions and not designed to send traffic to the websites of the contributors.

Web 2.0 is a perceived or proposed second generation of the web. This is were the web has evolved and improved over time and now offers better and more up to date services like blogs, social networking sites etc.

I think it's just a name for a kind of idea for a certain service. This idea is that the user is the center of the service and everything is based around this, instead of the web 1.0 'push it to the user' idea.

Well, Ajax was an enabling technology for web2.0 - it allowd for a quicker and easier and smoother user experience when uploading information to a website.
if you think about services like Twitter or Facebook - you can update your status, and the Ajax methods used to send the update will only cause one small part of the page to reload with your new status - as just one example
note: the Ajax bit isn't the web2.0 - the personal status updates is (and could have been done without Ajax, but then whole pages would have to be reloaded )

Its pretty much focused around the usability and interaction between the site, other sites, and its viewers. Just look around the web these days you are constantly running into those little "del.icio.us" or "digg" bars allowing all the things people do online to flow better with more usability and letting people do what they want when they want while at the same time letting them see what else is going and what other people in other places are doing. Its like a kick ass study hall when you were in high school... your with your friends you can talk to them while you get your work done, and everything is just working out how you want because the teacher is taking care of the dirty work while at the same time you are doing the things you understand. (aka as you fill out a form built in an Ajax application the app is doing all the dirty work with processing your input as you fill out the form. it makes your life easier so you dont have to sit there and wait for everything to load all at once.)
Jeffrey Zeldman has been trying to help people see the concept for a hell of a long time.. just people are starting to get a bigger grasp of it thanks to Ajax as-well as other applications.

* The content: the substance, and information on the site should be relevant to the site and should target the area of the public that the website is concerned with.
* The usability: the site should be user-friendly, with the interface and navigation simple and reliable.
* The appearance: the graphics and text should include a single style that flows throughout, to show consistency. The style should be professional, appealing and relevant.
* The visibility: the site must also be easy to find via most, if not all, major search engines and advertisement media.

Web 2.0 is not a webpage. It is a technology used to create web pages. It is a very interesting technology.
