.htaccess Redirect time limit

I've had a major redesign of one of my sites and I've been redirecting using .htaccess

Code:
Redirect /articles/fred/index.htm /articles/pete/index.htm
Any ideas how long I should leave the Redirects in place? There are hundreds of them

I don't suppose there is any definite 'need' to remove them - but I kind of like a neat 'streamlined' .htaccess

There are those who argue that one should never break a link -- and in this case...I'm inclined to agree. If you've done the legwork of redirecting, why bother removing them?

Steamlined .htaccess v.s. broken links =p

Yeah, I suppose I knew the answer already.

Just wondering if the engines take a 'finite' time to correct themselves. Or in fact, whether they 'ever' do, once a redirect is in place... :shrugs:

Maybe I'll leave it a few weeks then delete a couple of redirects and see if I get 404s

Thanks anyhow

Yes Golf and sports - I'm sure that's a genuine question

Well, I've checked my server logs.

In the last six weeks, I've had only ~30 -- 404s and they all came from ask.com

Curious eh?
