Ack, you've fallen victim to the Apple tax . iPods are just fashion accessories... Their sound qaulity is poor, they force you to use iTunes (which is lame) and they cost a packet (esp in the UK). A Sony Walkman would be my recommendation - very impressed with my friend's one... 16Gb excellent sound and £70 (as opposed to the £146 Nano equiv, which sucks by comparison - but hey it looks nice... )

Actually, Paul, I got my iPod during an Apple promotion. When I bought my student-priced MacPro, I got an engraved, 80Gb iPod for free. Sounded like a fair deal to me and I used it as a flashdrive for the longest while. Now I play audiobooks on it, through an old set of computer speakers.

I'll let you have that one then .... You still had to pay for a BSD based system to get it though...
(And before anyone asks, yes, I have used Mac's - I had a Mac Book Pro 17" for 2 years and it was the most rubbsih device I have ever had the misfortune to use!)

I have a Nokia E65 - not very happy with the Symbian OS, as I find it very sluggish compared to my old Sony Ericsson W810i - next in line is the iPhone [[ see note after off topic post ]]

I'd have to say I have some things I don't agree with in your statement. :\
Admittedly, the sound quality has never been perfect, although in the later generations, it has improved a lot - though one might wonder why an audiophile would want audiophile quality MP3 (up to 320kbps) compressed lossy playback (I grant that there is Apple Lossless, but let's not go there) anyway? If you want fidelity, steer clear of Mp3 stuff.
Anyhow, software wise, Apple have done quite an amazing job. I'll give to the fact that they do have the money to spend on it, but they also really have spent it, especially in the iPod Touch (iPhone OS) department. The depth of the software, and smoothness is undeniable. I am by no means an Apple fanboy - nor do I really love iTunes, yet for the average all round user, the iPod is an easy and accessible package.
[ I own the iPod touch, and will confirm that audio quality is quite a lot worse than on the Creative MP3 players, even though they play the same files ]
Sound quality iPod looses, but on the whole user experience*, they often win, and by quite a mile too.
*user being a non-techie, average person, and I deem most people unable to tell the difference between a FLAC Lossless file and a 128kbps MP3 [tried and tested]
Ah, and on the note of iPods merely being a fashion accessory:
My iPod Touch allows me to view my mail from whereever I am, proviced there is WiFi, and I have an excellent syncing calendar, so whatever I add on the go gets synced over WiFi to my online calendar, it plays my music, shows my photos with ease, and lets me view videos when going on trips -- most of these things I do alone, without ever showing it to anyone, bragging about it, etc - in fact, I often tell people to get the Creative instead. Sure, they *are* shiny when you get them, but do they remain that way? ;D
note: the reason I wish to buy an iPhone is, that it has a properly set up ability to change language, keyboard layout, and full character support for many languages. When I move to Japan in 2010, I will thus have the ability (depending on data plan or Wireless connectivity) to type to friends in Denmark, England, and also keep in touch with Japanese friends. I find it hard to find a good alternative to do all these things [know any, please do post! ]

I'm using a Sony Ericsson w910i. The sound is great, but the feature I like most are the touch screen, 3.2 MP camera, and the wireless LAN.

It still has it flaws, lets see:
- No good offline map system with gps (atleast haven't found one from store), I really missed this one when i went abroad and could not use google maps.
- No over 30 sec ringtones without jailbreaking.
- Donno if Itunes is a good or a bad thing.
- No flash support.
- No native PDF support.
- Syncing that cost you 90$ per year or so?
- How it's sold, You have to buy a expencive contract with your phone if you don't live in few countrys where they sell it without it. I had to make 2 year contract with a mobile company that I normally would not even consider as it's expencive.
- Apple blocking apps that don't suite their policy.
It's still lacking as a phone, it's a cool multimedia device I give you that.
