I've thought of just ordering Shaun of the Dead from somewhere over there but there is also that NTSC vs. PAL thing to worry about on top of the region code. I'd have to do some serious pain in the butt stuff to burn off a converted copy. I think I'll just have to wait for the US version..

hehehe...
does DVD actually care if it is NTSC or PAL? I thought it was the device that was important...
other wise the French would be screwed because of their really weird format... Or have they given that up for PAL now? Anyone know?

Take a close look at one of your DVD's down there among all the little logos for stuff like Dolby, THX, and Region code it will either say NTSC or PAL.
There are some of the region free players that have built in (NTSC-PAL) or (PAL-NTSC) converters but a lot of them just output NTSC disks as NTSC and PAL disks as PAL.
The standard DVD players that you will see in most retail stores here in the US only play NTSC region 1 disks.
A PC with the right software really doesn't care though, but I hate watching movies on my little PC monitor.

get a TV card?
i know what you mean about the PC though - no remote either for long distance pausing... I hate having to walk to the thing to pause before I can go get another beer.

As said most DVD players have both, NTSC and PAL. However... if you have an old TV, I know this from a mates SONY Trinitron, it will only play in B+W if NTSC DVD is played on a PAL TV and vice-versa.
As for why movie releases are staggered... the main reason is to get an idea if a film will flop or not. If a flop... in can often go straight to DVD in another country or a very limited release. Major releases typically get a same day release all over the world these days.

makes sense, as the it is the colour encoding that is different - but the intensity (black and white) is the same.

If it wasn't for Spaced... I really don't think this film would have been made! Top Brit film for once doesn't involve Hugh 'Gibbering' Grant.
Heck... I urge you all to buy, rent or find it on TV somehow! If you cant do that... let me know and you can watch them round mine on DVD.

I have to say that "Spaced" is without a doubt the best comedy series I've seen in recent memory. It has that which, for me, makes films/shows great: Amazing characters.
I saw Shaun Of The Dead last night, and I was happy as all get out to see most of the cast of Spaced appear in the film. In fact, near the beginning when Pete (Peter Serafinowicz, aka "Duane Bensey") appeared on screen, I busted out a loud obnoxious laugh, and then realized I was the only one in the theater laughing. hahaha. Anyways, I absolutely loved! the gore factor, especially the part when...
****SPOILER ALERT!****
...David gets pulled through the window of the Winchester and gets torn to pieces from the inside out! Amazing use of some classic but still really clever special effects. I also couldn't help but wonder if making his character look strikingly similar to Harry Potter was intentional or not.
I really really liked the balance of comedy and drama the film offered. It was gory enough to keep horror fans riveted, suspenseful enough to keep everyone watching, and still funny and charming enough to keep the squeamish from walking out.
Overall review: Four Stars. Brilliant!

Solution: Horus, you send a copy of Shaun of the Dead to ED and ED you send a copy of the Star Wars trilogy to Horus (although there is a bit of a price difference between the two, I'm sure you two can work something out).
Wouldn't that be a nice thing to do?
EDIT: Ok... I just realized that wouldn't cover the region thing, but I'm sure they sell region 1 DVD's in the UK, and vise versa (a computer can play both regions 1 and 2 right? just get a TV-out graphics card)

I already have the DVD's for Star Wars - I was talking about the cinematic releases for IV, V, VI and I back in the 90's.

Unfortunately there's not many places showing this move so I had to drive an hour each way to Pflugerville but I finally got to see it. I agree with N8. Extradog gives this one two thumbs up.

Pflugerville is a little northern suburb of Austin. It's not quite as far out in the sticks as it sounds.
