Movie/Literatue quotes that catch you...

So, I'm watching Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium with the kids a couple days ago. It's a pretty good movie for any of you out there with kids....the kids really liked it and I enjoyed it a bit myself

Anyway, the main character of the movie is Mr. Magorium and he is played by Dustin Hoffman. Magorium is sorta like a toy shop creator equivalent of a Willy Wonka. His character is totally non-nonsensical throughout the entire movie. However, he is something like 240 years old and decides that it is his time to "depart." His assistant (Mahoney, played by Natalie Portman) is having a hard time coming to grips with his departure and, in the middle of this kids' movie, this scene came out of nowhere and really blew my mind with how deep it was.....

Quote:
M.Magorium: (in a quiet sigh) oh, Mahoney…
Mahoney: Don’t go.
M.Magorium: My darling
Mahoney: I’m not ready, I’m not ready for it to end.
M.Magorium: I’m sorry.
(Mahoney sits down a step)

M. Magorium: When King Lear dies in Act Five do you know what William Shakespeare has written? He’s written, 'He Dies'. That's all, nothing more. No fan fare, no metaphor, no brilliant final words. The culmination of the most influential work of the dramatic literature is, He Dies. It takes Shakespeare’s genius to come up with, he dies. And yet every time I read those two words I find myself overwhelmed with dysphoria.
And I know its only natural to be sad, but not because of the words he dies, but because of the life we saw prior to the words.

I’ve lived all five of my acts Mahoney and I am not asking you to be happy that I must go. I’m only asking that you turn the page. Continue reading. And let the next story begin. And if anyone ever asks what became of me you relay my life in all its wander, and it with a simple, and modest, he died.

Mahoney: I love you.
M.Magorium: I love you too.
(M.Magorium takes Mahoney by the hands and gets her up to her feet)
M.Magorium: (he sighs) Your life is an occasion…….rise to it.
(he kisses her forehead and walks away)
This quote has since become one of my favorites in any movie I have ever watched. It actually inspired me to go out, buy King Lear and read it

Anyway, what quotes from either movies or literature have really struck you as truly brilliant (on any level....comical, dramatic, etc.)?

Quote:
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I love the quotes that pull everything together and really drives it home.

The Magorium quote......that basically sums up the previous 30 minutes of the movie and created a very unique way of letting one of the story's main characters "exit stage right."

A couple quotes from King Lear, itself....

Quote:
Fool: Have more than thou showest,
Speak less than thou knowest,
Lend less than thou owest,
Ride more than thou goest,
Learn more than thou trowest,
Set less than thou throwest;
Leave thy drink and thy whore,
And keep in-a-door,
And thou shall have more
Than two tens to a score.
To sum that one up......don't spend more than you have, don't constantly say everything that you know, don't give away more than you take in, always keep learning and live within your life and your life will be fuller than it should be.

These maybe the best comics that comes to my mind when talking about quotes in our family that we tell to each other.
Donald Duck is the most red magazine in Finland.

No one has mentioned 'Brave New World'?
Quote:
"Violent Passion Surrogate. Regularly once a month. We flood the whole system with adrenin. It's the complete physiological equivalent of fear and rage. All the tonic effects of murdering Desdemona and being murdered by Othello, without any of the inconveniences."

"But I like the inconveniences."

"We don't," said the Controller. "We prefer to do things comfortably."

"But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."

"In fact," said Mustapha Mond, "you're claiming the right to be unhappy."

"All right then," said the Savage defiantly, "I'm claiming the right to be unhappy."

"Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphilis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen to-morrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind." There was a long silence.

"I claim them all," said the Savage at last.

Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. "You're welcome," he said.
Surely the best exchange in dystopian literature.

In film, well, it may have been a bad movie, but nothing matches the effect of a well placed "you had me at 'hello'.".

I couldn't find the one I wanted from this book (although I'll probably post it when I get home tonight), but this one is a good quote too:

Quote:
From Terry Pratchett's Small Gods

Simony: Now we've got a truth to die for!
Brutha: No. Men should die for lies. But the truth is too precious to die for.

Doc Daneeka: There's a catch.
Yossarian: A catch?
Doc Daneeka: Sure. Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat isn't really crazy, so I can't ground him.
Yossarian: OK, let me see if I've got this straight. In order to be grounded, I've got to be crazy. And I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be grounded, that means I'm not crazy anymore, and I have to keep flying.
Doc Daneeka: You got it, that's Catch-22.
Yossarian: Whoa... That's some catch, that Catch-22.
Doc Daneeka: It's the best there is.
