Question

I want to know what the average connection stats are.
Is it 56k? (maybe with the help of dsl)
33.3? (perhaps, if you figure in bad phone lines)
28.8? (thats connecting with a dinosaur)
14.4? (uhm, tin can anyone?!)

I work with someone who INSISTS that average speed across the US is no greater than 28.8 due to old phone lines. I think the truth is up towards 56k.
I have found stats on the web that confirm that 28.8 is something like 17%, and that actual connection is 13% lower than advertised.......but 28.8??!

what do YOU think?!

I hardly think that the average connection speed across the US is 28.8. That is a little hard to believe that with all the new technology these days that most of our population uses a 28.8k modem. I think it would be at least 33.6k or 56k although I could be wrong... you never know.

at&t at home needs to make it's way to the sticks of the us... the phone lines in missouri are all wacked... adverage conection for me is 50,666 with data transfers lingering around 5.12 kb/sec . other locations the best i can get is 22,000, this is why i've started tinkering with some html compressors. they may only save 12-20kb per page, but for the lag lines in this state it does pay off.

In Britain...

Most phone lines are provided by BT. And they have made sure to keep all of their lines updated. (Especially if they are your ISP ) So in Britain the average speed is 56K.
Don't know about USA though, sorry!

PS: I 'm with R_Russel in disagreeing that the average connection speed across the US is 28.8!

Yes I think my co-worker who believes in the 28.8 thing is smoking some really good crack.

Angry 33k

I think that it's 33k. Check out: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/user_survey...ion_Speed.html

Same people, a 1999 published report. Look at the difference a year makes. Now...56k is on top.

I think people are confused by what is meant here, I know I am! I have a 56k modem, and 'officially' a 56k connection with my ISP. I think the question is does my modem really connect to my ISP at 56k. Nope, and you probably don't either. Right now I am connected at 49,333. It's alot better than 28.8 anyway! When I check I do find that I am connected around 50ish a little more or a little less. I think alot depends on where you are in the country. I bet they get better connections near cities where it is worthwhile for phone companies to upgrade their lines for many customers compared to out in the boonies where you have to replace miles of line for only a few people. I'm lucky, I might be out in the boonies but I am also in a new development area so they put in the fiber optic stuff.

I should mention one other thing. I have changed ISPs several times out here. The first one because they had different 56k than my computer uses, I've got Kflex. I forget the other one but that's the one they had. I know someone will tell me that if I upgrade my modem to v.90 I should be able to connect to any 56k. Yes, true but you still get better connections if you go with the type your modem is made for. The second one is the one I wanted to mention. I was getting bad connections with them and they said that they thought there was an analog system between my house and where I was connecting with them. Computer data is transferred digitally, when going through an analog system it has to be 'translated' from digital to analog then back to digital again. This slows things down. Just thought I would mention that.

A related report published ACTUAL connections speeds at 13% less than advertised. This means, 56 translates to 45-50 ish. This supposedly takes into account older phone lines. And you are right, it does beat 28.8!!

I work for the beast that Dave swift has mentioned, and I know that the average speed for the UK is not 56K.

Lines in the UK arent up to the spec that they should be.

<ADDED>
Just looking at the post's again, a factor is also distance from the telephone exchange, and also is the exchange overloaded with customers trying to connect to the ISP's network.

Does the ISP have a decent radius server installed? What speed is the megastream (the connection from the exchange to the ISP's home network).

Also what type of connection does the ISP have to the Internet backbone, T3 a frctional T3. Do they co-locate their servers with another Internet provider.

http://www.itglossary.net/ocl.html This will show the types of connections that can be in use for high speed Internet connections.

There are alot of things to consider when looking at a connection speed.

Your initial connection speed of 50K'ish is only your connection to the ISP's network not your initial connection to the Internet. Once you get on the net you are then contending with all the other IP packets out there!!

In most counties the average speed for a 56 K modem based connection hovers around 28K to 40 K.
