making firefox run even faster

thought it couldn't be so huh?

I've heard it said, here and other places, that Opera is the fastest browser available. It is fast - there's no denying that - but there are ways to make FireFox render pages every bit as quickly, with just a few easy "tweaks." I thought it was worthwhile to bring these "hidden settings" more into the light.

To get started, type "about:config" in your FireFox address bar. The settings you're looking for are:

1.) network.http.pipelining
2.) network.http.pipelining.firstrequest
3.) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
4.) network.http.proxy.pipelining

Set #1, #2, and #4 to "true". Set #3 to a high number, like 32.

Enabling the pipelining features allows the browser to make multiple requests to the server at the same time. The "maxrequests" is the maximum number of requests it will send at once. I've heard that 8 is the most it will send at once, but setting it higher won't hurt, just in case.

Adjusting those settings will help pages render much faster in FireFox. In fact, my own observations have been that, tweaked in this manner, FireFox will render faster than Opera (and yes, I realize that others may experience different results).

I actually tried it and it and I noticed a speed improvement in Firefox - I don't know if it gets faster than Opera, maybe. But I still prefer getting everything in one package, instead of downloading a skeleton twice the filesize of Opera, getting tons of extensions, tweaking the settings like this, and downloading a separate email client if I needed one

although I didn't want this to be a browser war but I do have to argue with you Jere.

Opera files size is 16Mb, if you get it all, firefox is 6mb, it is suppose to be a skeleton for people who don't want the email and chat and other stuff. if you have java than yes, Opera is smaller. mozilla/firefox don't require this.

if you want the whole package then download mozilla. even then it is still smaller than Opera, sitting at 12mb.

but a lot of it has to do if you need java or not.

No, let's not make this a browser war. But let me ask, Firefox and Mozilla don't come with Java, do they??

no, but they also don't require it. Opera does if you don't have it installed. that is why they give you 2 choices.

You can just as well download it, and run it without Java. It doesn't require anything. If you don't have Java, then Java applets simply don't work. They give you the option so you wouldn't have to download Java if you already have it installed.
