rjlstar is on a distinguished road
Direct transfer between two computers

One of my computers got a virus. I've already scanned "My Documents" (200 GB) and the virus is not in there. I want to back this folder up before I reinstall Windows. I have no router or large external harddrive. How does one go about connecting ethernet to ethernet between to computers? I'm having a hard time finding info because the virus keeps on redirecting my browser.

generally, if you have XP or newer, you should be able to use any old ethernet cable (the OS will cleverly reverse the connections on one end so they work properly) - but I don't know if that is support by all hardware (especially older ones), so you might need a crossover cable instead.

other than that - two MS PCs will negotiate a 'local' network between themselves, and then you should be able to view any shared drives or folders over the network connection (as long as they either have no workgroup or are set to the same workgroup, and have different computer names).
