Both viewpoints are valid, Garrett. The main problem I see with the whole thing is, as some have already commented in the article, that most of the webpages out there aren't done by someone with a working knowledge of good design. Unless they're professionally made (for the most part), web sites have become repositories of every new trick on the Internet, without regard for usefulness, appropriateness or even good taste.
