I have had two very different experiences of website domain registration in the last week.
I've always used free web space providers in the past. But on Friday last week I finally bit the bullet and registered my own personal domain. The company I used for this is 123-reg.co.uk. The registration and payment process was very simple, and the control panel for managing the domain is clear and simple to use. There's a good FAQ section, and the support options are e-mail (via online form), fax, telephone or snail mail. Ideal for somebody like myself who has no prior experience of this sort of thing. I am happy with what I have seen so far.
On the other end of the scale, as the person responsible for web development at my company, we have a new product and are purchasing additional domains to use in conjunction with this new product. Our current website domain was purchased through a company called FreeParking.co.uk, so I was advised to use these by our network admin chap.
My experiences with these was not good. The online ordering system was flawed, and kept forgetting what I had added to the basket. I then checked out my purchase of four domains. Now although I wished to purchase four of them, only three were showing at checkout, so I thought I'd check these out, then purchase the other later. I then get e-mails confirming my purchase of FOUR domains (indivisual e-mails for each one), but also an invoice receipt showing payment for only three. Plus, four domains are still showing as waiting for checkout. So, as you can imagine, I'm already confused as to what is going on.
I then went to the support section to see if there is somebody I can speak to, and the only support contact they offer is snail mail, and to a US address also. There is a "General Question" e-mail address given, which I decided to contact them on. And SURPRISE SURPRISE, the e-mail got returned with an undeliverable message.
The fact they don't have a UK based call centre I find very bad.
In conclusion, I would recommend 123-Reg, and would tell anybody to stay clear of FreeParking.
