Adding a login to your website

Anyone have information on how to go about this? I use godaddy.com and website tonight which is a free website builder.

It's probably horrible that I use a free website builder, but I haven't learned enough html/css to be on my own yet. That's off topic though. Please give serious answers.

Login scripts usually require a knowledge of server-side programming, not just HTML/CSS. You'd need to be able to access a database, too. I'm not sure how that gets incorporated into a page. I'll move this thread over to Server-Side Programming for you. One of the guys there will know more.

As for free web builders, I use www.nvu.com so there's nothing wrong with the programmes. You just have to be careful how the code gets created, look at the code in the design view occasionally to see how things are being put together.

Thanks, you think I could switch over to a none website tonight builder? How does that scratch work anyways? What do you log into or how do you upload it? Getting a bit a head of myself.

Anyone know the answer to the first question though? It's more php for login?

Yes, you would need to leave website tonight, it's a lost cause trying to get logins to work with that. In fact, my recommendation is to leave godaddy all together, they are a great place for domains but for hosting they are overpriced and their servers are slow, I personally use a company called hostmonster, very satisfied.

Regarding website builders, the NVU system pegasus suggested could possibly be a solution for you, but I haven't used that myself. However, logins are complex. You need a good knowledge of php to create a login system, and it's hard to get a good knowledge of php without a good knowledge of HTML first.

Of course, there is another, simpler way. If you only need one login, and you can share it among multiple people, just use an .htaccess password. MUCH simpler than building a php login system, you can do it with very little experience, many cpanels in fact will do it for you (just go to password protect directories, FYI godaddy doesn't use cpanel).

24788 agrees: thanks

Basically you need to have a database and the connection is done using server side scripting. Some of the security features to be considered while using the login procedure.
