What is Search Engine Marketing? What's the difference between SEM and SEO?

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is an Internet marketing strategy which employs social media, like online communities, RSS feeds, social news buttons, blogging and incorporates third-party community functions like images and video.

Social Media Optimization differs from Search Engine Marketing (SEM) because the focus of SMO is to drive traffic from sources other than search engines.

Social Media Optimization (SMO):

A set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, blogging and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is a form of search engine marketing.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

The act of altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines. In the past, has also been used as a term for any type of search engine marketing activity, though now the term search engine marketing is more commonly used as an umbrella term.

SEM stand for search engine marketing .SEM is aform of internet marketing that seeks to promet your website by increasing visibility in SERP through the use of paid placement

SEO
It is the process of increasing the visibility of the website on the SERP for target keyword

I think SEM and SEO might be overlapping in some fields. SEM might include SMO and SEO.

Actually SEO is the part of SEM but nowadays we use both terms indepedantly. SEM is the marketing activities for marketing your business on the search engines like PPC (pay per click) advertising. SEO is the search engine optimization specifically.
