Domains Vs. Sub-directories

I created a sub-domain the other day (Godaddy) and it came out looking like this:

www.sitename dot com/sub-domain/

Shouldn't that come out looking like:

www.sub-domain.sitename dot com

Nope a subdomain should look like

sub-domain.sitename dot com

what you crteated was sub directory
