If anybody has advertised on forums, what was your experience?

Define 'advertise'. Most of the time I just consider it spam

by advertise, I mean actually paying the forum to place a banner to your site on their forum, like one of the top banners for example.

The problem I see with that is that return visitors often ignore ads. And thats where most traffic comes from in forums; return visitors. However, dont really have any statistics to back that statement up, sorry.

If the sponsor is good for the members, I know many members use your the ad as lazy bookmark. I do that sometimes, and I know others that do it.

I don't normally click on the forums ads. I infact click on the signatures more than the actual forum ads. I think it is just because the possition of the ads and the signatures are more in your face sort of thing.

There's a banner on this one up the top. Well actually it is probably text ads but occassionally shows a banner image ad.

I click sig links more than ads. Ads to me are associated with pop-ups which = bad.

I think forums should embed a single or two "inline" adwords text ads if you ask me.
At least I sometimes notice them in forums.

Yes, i agree most people are just banner-blind, and placing banners is really expensive.

forums advertising... IMO banner ads convert best compare to text ads.
eye focusing on banner ads outside the posting section better.

I agree. I placed a banner at a forum forum for my site and found that the majority of people at the forum, are there for that, and don't really want to click away...
