Transfering Hosts

Hi Guys,

I usually develop sites with Joomla and I have transferred hosts in the past.

I am trying to transfer a basic html site with no databases or anything. I copied all files in the old hosts www folder to the new hosts public html folder. I havent pointed the domain to the new host yet but when I type in the ip address of the new host, it says not found. Shouldnt it be coming up?

What am I missing?

Thanks

If this is a shared hosting account, which presumably it is, the IP address is that of the "server", not your individual account. Usually, this is an account owned by the superuser of the server.

Most account administration control panels (e.g: CPanel), use the standard unix user directory denotation to do temporary URL access, e.g: http://127.0.0.1/~username.

If in doubt, your web host should be able to confirm the methology they use.

mikeyp is on a distinguished road
Likely you won't be able to reach your site through the ip address as puffin said. You reach your site via something called "host headers". It allows you to host multiple websites on one server with one ip address. I use this at my work to host our website in various languages.
