What should we do with a drunkin salor...

I gotta problem.

I have a leader designer that lives over seas. I've been sending him work for a bit, and he always seems a little late, but it's been working out. He has been telling me how he is broke, and he has a kid and a wife - So I've been sorta going out of my way to get this guy work.

I get this project from a client, and I split the profit with him (I don't even need the project, the pay is so low that I'm working for almost nothing) Last Thursday we have an internet conference with the client, and the designer tells him that he can have the work for him by Saturday (3 days) It's now the following Wednesday (7 days) And I've received one design....

I send him an email today telling him he has one more day to get the work to me but I know he needs the money

So I'm stuck between 1. Dropping him the from the project and pretty much cutting off his only source of income. 2. Continue to stall my client

Not sure what to do. also, anyone want to do some front end work on a website for $200, lol - If I drop him I will need a replacement.

any thoughts?

Kram is on a distinguished road
I think that you just need to be firm with him, dont just cut him off, but highlight the fact that his work ethic is not up to scratch and that if it continues, you will have no choice but to find a replacement.

If he does indeed really really need the work, his motivation should be simply to feed his family, I would like to know his excuse for being so very long overdue on a design.

I say, give him one more chance, and specifically state that fact. If it happens again, drop him.

Agreed with Kram

If you want, you can hire a designer - contractor, and pay the (contractor).

Diminish his pay by the amount you've paid to the contractor.

That way, he'll realize he needs to be prompt

I agree with Mark as well...although, there's no point in risking your reputation for him if he won't be straight with you and keep to his word.

Sounds callous, but more often than not, going out on a limb for someone else ends with you falling flat on your arse, particularly if they've been proving to be unreliable.

Granted, I do concede that there are scenarios wherein people warrant a certain amount of benefit of the doubt, but it sounds like he's been slouching for a while.

His personal problems aren't yours. While it's admirable to want to help him out, if he's choosing to slack off continuously, and it's finally culminated in such a delay that it's directly impacting the project...you've gotta ask yourself how much of your reputation this person is worth.
