So long as you didn't use their images and such, there's no reason why you can't copy the layout. Once you start using their images and/or content, then you're heading towards a violation of copyright.

And yes, you *can* get into trouble if you're found out.

To some extent, it depends what you want long term. If it's some sort of one off dabble in building a website, it's less likely to be an issue than if you're trying to build a reputation as a professional in the industry.

Doing things that way can be a good way to learn, but if you start making a living from it, it's more likely to attract attention and negative publicity.

looking at code and seeing how someone else has achieved some effect is a part of what makes the web so powerful...

however, you do have to remember that that work was, most likely, created by someone trying to make a living - either directly from the script they created by selling it or using as part of their site, or indirectly, by showing off what they can do...

if they give licence to freely copy their methods, then there is no issue...

however, if they don't, then you have a choice - you can ask them if you could copy their method... a lot of people will say okay, but will ask for some link back to their site... which isn't really a problem, is it...

you could also try to emulate the effect - in all honesty, it can be rather difficult to prove that you copied someone else's script... at least, for simple ones - there's only so many ways to achieve most effects... its only how they're combined into a working page/framework that is really the issue...

so, if you see a cool rollover effect on a menu - then feel free to have a look at the CSS and JavaScript and attempt to emulate it - but don't go copying the design and the framework for the entire site...

Pegasus agrees: *lol* You're cleaning the spammer off the walls if you can't remember to aim higher than that.

Thanks for that Horus.

to be honest i ddint even consider contacting the developer and seeing if i could maybes use some of his work.

i think all in all i wanted a quick way to get my site up and running. saying that im having branding issues as it is so that will be another thread here.

As i say, i like the site and will just use it as reference after i have contacted the designer and see what is what.

since poting this thread i have thought about it a lot and i wont be copying it and i think i answered my own question. yes it is cheeky. i dont know where my morals were but know ive found them.

Thanks to all who have replied.
