I just wanted to add another chapter to the image usage debate.

I wanted to purchase some images from istockphoto as backgrounds for a website and i checked to make sure that this was legal under their standard license. This is part of the reply I got:

"Please, note that the images that are going to be used on websites, cannot be bigger than 800 x 600 pixels. Also note that the images have to be embedded in your final design."

What exactly do they mean by "embedded in your final design?"

You can't use, for example, a picture of a computer by itself, but if you have the computer as part of your logo, then you can. You can't have just the single image. And the image can't be bigger than one entire background - 800x600 pixels.

so as long as there is other content on the page other than the image it is ok to use?

No. It has to be part of the new image. Take, for example, the picture of the cat in my signature. That's not the full original image. I combined it with text and cropped the original drastically to produce that bar. That's what they mean by "embedded in your final design".

so is there any way i could use these images as background images? there are going to be multiple layers of images and content on top of them.

Multiple layers of images? Why not just create one image out of the many and have the content on top of that. Then you'd be within the instructions given.

i suppose i could do that, the only reason i didn't want to was because i wanted to center the container and have the background image fill up the sides based on how big the user's screen is but i'll just use a solid color. thanks for the help

*lol* That's why I bought a digital camera. If I can't find what I need, then I can jerry-rig it using the camera and Photoshop.
