Copyrights

Hey everyone it's me again, I just have a quick little question.

Okay, in the past, all I did was take a template that the owner said was free and just took it and added content to it.

Then, I started to make my own designs, not for profit or anything, just for a bit of fun, and since it was fun I really didn't care if anyone else used it so, I didn't add a copyright.

Now I'm starting to make web designs for my own personal website, and I started making them for money. So, of course, I don't want anyone stealing my work.

I just wondered if I needed to do anything to be able to add a copyright to the bottom of my site. (that probably sounds like a stupid question, but like I have said before, I'm new to this whole web design thing, more or less).

Also, what would be the correct way to display the copyright. It's like Copyright 2008, all rights reserved, or something like that.

Thanks for any help in advanced.

Actually, you don't have to put anything on what you create for you to have the copyright. It's automatically there.

However, it is sometimes usefull to 'remind' people that you are the copyright holder of the page by adding a copyright symbol, the c in a circle, your name and the year for example. There are no standardised ways of doing it, so you have to find one you like. The 'all right reserved' is also usefull to put on, but it's mostly used in legal terms when you are selling your site to another person, eg. a client, but you still retain the artistic rights of the site.

The copyright symbol is created in HTML with the code ©

You can add the copyright information, but technically, you don't need to. You just need to prove that you created the work. You could burn it to a CD. Come to think of it, that may not be a bad idea, anyway. Save all the files to a CD and you have a copy of your work that you can add to a resume, if necessary.

No, not any more. The paperwork is usually reserved for certain printed documents, but for the most part, any work that is created is automatically copywritten to the creator unless there's a contract in place that states that the purchaser/employer has sole copyright to the work created.
