50% Transparent GIF

Hi All,

This seems like a really dumb, really basic problem, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. All I need is a 50% transparent GIF (50% opacity on the white layer with a transparent layer beneath). However, when I create this image and then try to 'Save For Web' I basically am forced to either choose a pattern/noise/diffusion transparency which adds hideous patterns to the image, OR I have to choose a solid white with no transparency at all - WHAT GIVES?

Seriously, I feel like I've tried every combination of settings and I just can't get this simple image to save properly. PNGs work well, but since Microsoft failed miserably to support them in IE6 this really isn't a viable option. Can anyone assist with this?

norebbo.com is an unknown quantity at this point
You've just discovered the limitation of gif files. Basically, the transparency you get is all or nothing. PNG offers better transparency, but it's not supported across all browsers.

For situations like this, I just create the exact look I am trying to get in Photoshop, then save it as a flat jpg. You have to get a bit creative and realize that for some situations, a transparent gif just won't work.

RysChwith will become famous soon enough
Your best option*, if you want the 50% transparency, is to make a gif with two alternating colors in a checkerboard pattern. You then designate one color or the other as the transparent color, and you get every other pixel knocked out, giving you 50% transparency.

* I should perhaps say "most practical option." The best would probably be PNG with the IE PNG hack, but that's sort of a pain.
