I generally think flash intros are a bad idea. Usually when somebody goes to your site, they are going there for the content, and they dont want to wait 2 minutes to get it.

the flash was well done......but the problem, as everyone has said.....is the file size. Flash isn't a bad tool, but rather a abused one. People add so much interactivety and animation that the end result does not justify the means.
Lets look at a simpler 'flash' website. See how long this one takes to load, and what you think the overall appeal is:
www.eye4u.com
this one is at the other end of the spectrum. It has a skip button, began playing almost immediately on my 56k connection, and was very stimulating.

Well, you really shouldn't have sites designed in all Flash. Some people don't want to install Flash or have slow computers and cannot enjoy the full capability of Flash.

I know that there is a population that doesn't like flash.....yet there is still a strong market for well done flash pages. I wouldn't hold your breath and wait for flash to go away......Netscape and MSIE have been shipping the flash plug-in with their browsers....standard, since release 4.0. Its about the only thing Netscape and Microsoft agree on.
The best bet would be to help the flash designers do a better job.
In any event, web pages started in much the same trend. Everything was centered, with <blink> all over the place, and horribly annoying animated gifs littered the scene. Static pages have come a long way since those days, and you could expect the same improvements from flash. Don't just base all flash websites/ animations on those which are done poorly. You have to look at the technology as a whole.

I agree
Flash realy is nothing more than Shockwave made easier, but someone has told the suits that they need an all-Flash website. This may be OK for the few here in Europe with high speed connections but I have seen enough absolutely unviewable Flash sites that I just skip the wholething if it has a flash splash page. This is very annoying if it as site you actually want info from.
The best uses of flash are when a movie is embedded into an html page to supplement the text so you get both the information you need and a good look.
I don't think its the designers fault themselves just the clients insist on having something that looks like something else they've seen before, and they dont; want to hear about things like download time etc.

yes, sometimes we do what we want to do, the rest of the time we do what we are being paid to do.
Flash, just like HTML/ JavaScript/ CSS/ DHTML/ JAVA/etc can be used well/ abused/ used poorly/ or sometimes... useful.

i love flash, but i'm over .wav file soundtracks...
i aggree with most of what's been said here, but my pet hate at the moment is the fact that so many of these big flash intros take so long because they use wav files.....
i'm using a laptop with a 33k modem in australia, and sorry, but i have neither the time nor inclination to wait around for poor quality wav files to downlaod... mp3's are much quicker even at high quality.
If people REALLY want to use music, why not break it up into 4 or 5 mp3 files that loop in the different scenes?
I aggree with dr. web, in that the technology is still young, and can only develop as we push the boundries...
Well, that's my 2 cent's worth...
