What shopping cart would you recommend?
I have a client that in addition to a standard shopping cart needs some additional features:
This client has be skincare products business, and wants an e-commerce site to sell her products online. However, in addition to just a standard shopping cart, she also wants a guide feature, where people are asked a series of questions (such as if they have dry skin, oily skin, sun marks, etc) and then based upon those answers it automatically recommends products for them.
So what I am looking for is a shopping cart program that preferably is built with PHP and MySQL. Within the database that holds the product info, I would also like to add a number of fields that would hold info on what type of skin conditions any certain product would be applicable for. The skin guide program would then use these charachteristics as a baseline for making its recommendations.
So specifically, I'm looking for a shopping cart that has a well-documented MySQL database so that I can easily write queries for the skin guide program to use. Additionally, I'm hoping that the shopping cart itself can be easily modified as I will have to modify the "add product" page of the cart so that when my client is adding a product they can also add the various skin care charachteristics about the product into the database.
I would like a shopping cart done in PHP and MySQL because those are the languages that I am most familiar. Of course, a free cart would be preferred.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

I think OS Commerce is a good one in PHP but there are others. also you may need to have it built or build it yourself to get the product guiding system.

Yeah, I've looked at OS Commerce but it's a real pain to build custom HTML templates with the current version (supposed to get better in version 3) and it doesn't use php mod_rewrite or anything for SEO purposes. Thanks for the suggestion though.

This post is a few days old so you may have found what you need by now. If not, try Zen Cart. I just finished a couple of sites with it. I like it.

Well, as you said about the post being old, I dont think that Sawtooth would leave a look of this for a long time.Anyways, since there have been discussions on good shopping carts, I would recommend the purchase of SSL certificate so that it will be a secure website in terms of data transfer. Your client would be happy to know about this as it would only increase the customers trust on the website and ensure data encryption.Having a secure e-commerce site for your client would also make him trust you more for his site.

ausaf, copying someone else's response just to get your links seen usually gets the links removed as spam and yourself banned from the forums.

Hello,
I think X-Cart would work for your case (maybe with some small extra customization). It has a product configurator and feature comparison modules which work the way similar to what you have described. Their lates version, 4.2, does support SEO URLs. I assume this might be a choice worth consideration.

I like Magento but you need to know code and be able to understand the tutorials. If you can, then this is the best option as it has a ton of features for a free product.

I'll throw in my vote for Zen Cart as well. It's got a great community and add-ons for almost any thing you can think of. One thing I haven't been able to find good support for with Zen Cart is subscriptions/recurring payment type products, but besides that it's met my needs perfectly.
