Billing / Quoting a customer question

I have a friend with a successful side business (selling products on ebay), but he really wants to automate things as well as get more business. I've talked to him about an ecommerce website and he loved the idea. I've already got a good plan in place as far as the technology I would build on, the only thing I'm not sure of is what I should quote him.

Also, I was wondering if I should charge him per sale - only for sales over his current average - or would you not bother? Or just a monthly SEO charge? If I went the sale route, the figure I had in mind was about 10% (total sale would only be $20-40). I could always keep the upfront cost down by doing this.

I've often used the Design Quote tool for ballpark figures (calls for $1,938.00 - $2,622.00 here), but I also don't want to fleece my friend.

I suppose I'm just a little lost on what to quote him -- any ideas or input would be appreciated.

I'd go with the percentage on extra sales option. Mathis way you are both motivated by what's important, more sales! It also keeps you inteterested and locked in for the longer term.

I think this is a much healthier model than a monthly retainer, as its kind of a "no win no fee" system.

Hope this helps.

I guess it depends on how much you trust your friend :-) to tell you how many sales there were. To keep it friendly you may want to just charge monthly fee for maintenance, SEO, problem-fixing, requests, etc.
