Smile Looking for advice about buying a domain name

Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some general advice about buying a domain name and what pitfalls I should be wary of.

Hi kaori,

I suppose that there a few things that you should look out for potentially. The first is "free domain names". You should not sign-up at a service that offers a domain name for free because not only will you not own the domain, but they will also place a banner frame at the bottom of your site. Additionally, there is usually a large fee after your free year that costs more than it would have if you registered it yourself.

Secondly, I noticed that some sites that claim to be selling domain names, are actually selling nothing more than subdomains of their own domain name. A subdomain is in the form of site.site.com, while a true domain name is just site.com. Do not spend money if you are going to sign up for a sub domain service, there are enough subdomain services that operate for free.

Third, I would stick to .com, .net, and .org. There are many extensions available to buy, but many of them are not true domain names, but rather a complex redirection system. In addition, unless your site is just for fun, it may not be taken as seriously without a well-known domain extension.

Finally, don't pay more than $15 per year for your domain name. My personal recommendation is http://www.godaddy.com. They sell domain names for under $9 per year.

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions.

Nothing to add to what Jason has already said. Go to godaddy.com and use the domain name lookup tool and try domian names that you are interested in registering to see if they are available. Find the name you like or will settle for and take it from there. Its a long process on godaddy because they put you through an obstacle course before you finally get to register the name but for the price they register names for and then they will park it for free, its worht wading through the junk/offers they make you look at.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give it a go. But should I choose where to host my site first? Do I need to give an IP address, and would I be able to keep my domain if I change host?

Hi kaori-

It is not absolutely necessary to choose hosting first. At godaddy.com you can log back in later to manage your account (be sure to remember your username and password). It is here that you can change the dns (nameserver) info at any time.

Good luck-
Lamar

Thumbs up

It would be a better option to register the domain name with the hosting provider as this will allow you to manage your domains and web hosting services very easily. However, if you do not wish to register the domain with the hosting provider, I would suggest you to register the domain with domain name registrars like Enom, godaddy etc. as these are reliable enough

I suggest you register your domains separately from your host, so you retain full control of them. For domain registration I recommend Name.com or Namecheap.
