I am sooooooooo n00b. please help! - HTML Forums

so i want to start my very first website but am very confused with all the requirements and services and such.

let me start off by saying that i am very good with computers, but only in regards to hardware and terms. i am good working within windows, but i know very little about html or webspace or anything pertaining to making a website. i do however, plan on learning html so that i can make my website - just letting you know that making the page isnt a concern of the post.

what i want is to be able to have my own domain. whatever i want it to be, .com. i understand that i will have to buy a domain, but as for the webspace, cant i ftp my own terabyte hard drive and make my own webspace, or will i have to buy webspace from the same place where i purchased my domain name?

and i want to use an html program, or even just word and save my files as html files, and then upload them to my site so that the page displays on the web. in other words, i dont want to have to be online or log into my domain in order to edit my site and use some online program - i want to type the html code myself and then be able to upload the page to some sort of "online hard drive" or ftp, which will allow people to view my site.

Hi, you can use your own pc to host the website but normal website like personal website, people will usually find a web hosting provider to host the website.

Host your website at a web hosting provider is much cheaper.

If you want to host it at your place, you need to get a good server, with much security software like firewall and other configuration to protect your server.

Sure, you can edit your html offline using a text editor like notepad or htmlkit. And once you are done, you can ftp to publish it to be viewed by all in the internet.

thanks for your reply but i still have a few questions.

so all i should do then is simply get a domain name and pay the price per year?

i plan on making my website a forum, will only specific servers provide the compatability for that, or will all hosts work with forums?

what should i be looking for?

Yeah, you can get a domain and pay for the web hosting package. You can also pay for the domain first, to reserve that domain name and pay the web hosting package later.

About the which package is suitable for your forum, that depends on what language that forums is using. If that forum runs on PHP, you should go for Linux package. If it runs on ASP or ASP.NET, you should go for Window package.
