Installing Apache problem / Failed localhost

Hello,
I am trying to install Apache, since it is needed for Joomla CMS requirements.

Anyways, I installed it using this tutorial: http://www.sebastiansulinski.co.uk/t..._on_windows_xp

I don't know if this matters to anyone, but when installing I choose Port 80.

When I completed installation, etc. I went to the Firefox Browser and typed in:

http://localhost/ and it Failed to Connect Error:

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.
Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.

I don't know too much about installing stuff, but I have a feeling maybe this tutorial was outdated when they told me to download this file: Win32 Binary (MSI Installer): apache_2.0.59-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi

Is that not the current file for installing Apache on Windows XP? Or is there something else that could be the problem?

If anyone knows, would be so much help..

hmm...

1. is your apache service actually running? you can look under Control Panel > Adminstrative Tools > Services for Apache2 - or you can see if the Monitor Apache Services is available (from the start menu) and see if it is running under that.

2. in your apache install, you will have a directory called 'conf' and a file in there called httpd.conf - this is your global Apache configuration

Look for the directive DocumentRoot - where is pointing at?

Question Apache problem

Hello. Thanks for looking at my problem.. well I have checked to see if apache is running and it says "Apache monitor is already started".

I also checked by pressing "Start" and command prompt pops up this:

[error] < os2 > This system cannot find the file specified. No install service named "Apache2".

I also went to my apache install folders, and looked in conf. I don't see a file called httpd.conf but I only see these files: httpd, httpd.default, magic, magic.default, mime.types, mime.types.default

Question No Install Service named Apache2

Hmmm
I just also went to command prompt and typed in the following:
C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\Apache.exe

and it said:

'Crogram' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable
program or batch file.

I found a solution at: http://www.tildemark.com/internet/no...d-apache2.html

I'm guessing it would work however something is blocking Apache from running. Port 80 is in use. To run it, would I have to exit all browsers? And what else should I shut down?

Also, one more thing. When I go to msconfig in my startup, there is no IIS for me to uncheck. Does that mean I don't have it installed?

1. the command line uses spaces as argument separators, so you should put " around the command:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\Apache.exe"
2. there should be a httpd.conf - perhaps, if you have Windows hiding 'known file extensions', this would be httpd.

3.
Code:
[error] < os2 > This system cannot find the file specified. No install service named "Apache2".
no idea on this, sorry - sounds like something didn't install correctly...

4. if you're running XP Home, then you won't have IIS at all - if you're running Professional, then it will only be running if you have specifically installed it.

there are a number of other services that can grab port 80 - Skype, for example.
