***DISCLAIMER*** Haven't used it in a while, so I'm not sure how it's changed.

From what I remember, it's a great tool to use if you want to hide the meat and potatoes of what a database can really do. It's easy to open up Filemaker and tell it to build, say, a CD inventory for you and allow you to add/edit/delete your records. And it even lets you deviate from the base set of templates.

But from what I remember, if you really wanted to get under the hood and write SQL queries and such, you can't do it. Also, I'm not sure of it's support for ANSI SQL if you were to try and query it over the web.

Have you already purchased it, or are you considering purchasing it? For what reasons are you wanting to use it?

I've got FileMakerPro5 and it gets used a fair bit.

You can put files on the web in one of two ways. You can convert it to a table HTML page, or you can have it "WebCompanioned". The only drawback to the Companion is that it requires a special plug-in on the server. Not everyone has it, but I think it comes with the programme. *g* I'm not that advanced yet.

There is a relatively good book out, "FileMakerPro Advanced", by Cynthia L. Baron and Daniel Peck. I'm still working on getting my database sorted out, but this has helped a fair bit.

Sorry I can't be of more help than this.

Thanks for your replies! I was just curious if there was anyone in this forum that worked with FileMaker Pro and liked it or hated it. I'm not planning on buying it. I worked with it last year and noticed that some people are still using it these days, but i thought it was outdating itself? just wanted to get some of your thoughts. thanks

I like it. It's simple to set up a basic database, I can change layouts without losing information, and it save me a gazillion hours of html coding.

I'm working on reference material for a game I play, and I have over 2500 entries. So far. I laid out the way I wanted each entry to look, saved the entire file as an html page and I'm in the process of simple 'C&P' each entry onto a new page. *lol* Sure, it's a lot of work, but it would have been a whole lot more work if I had to do everything by hand. I can even set up the individual appendices with FileMakerPro as well.

For the record, I have two other database programmes, Appleworks and the one that comes with MSOffice, and I haven't used them since I got FileMaker. Filemaker is far simpler to get started on.
