thanks Aero...

I had found some references for that CSS3 attribute, but couldn't get it working...

the only problem is that the orientation isn't correct...

the text should be flowing from top to bottom, and the block should progress from left to right - i've been trying the other values of the attribute, but it doesn't seem to do anything...

i've tried bt-lr but that just writes the text as normal... in fact, any other combination does not seem to work...

I'm testing in IE6 SP2

Hi there Horus,

surely the easiest method would be to use an image....

unfortunately, the text is taken from a database...

i could use serverside graphics libraries, but don't realy want to spend the time installing, configuring and learning...

In that case, have you considered just placing your monitor on an adjacent side.

Dead thread

Hey I don't know if this is a dead thread (as of this posting 8/16/2006) or not, but it helped me and at the same time I found out why

writing-mode: tb-rl;

doesn't produce the desired results (vertical text orinentation); you also need to specify

display: block;

within the css.

style="writing-mode: tb-rl; filter: flipH() flipV();"

The best solution (even now) is to use flash: make a simple movieclip that take as an external parameter the text that is going to be displayed (you can use param FlashVars or pass the parameter as a get parameter when declaring flash movie path in html ), and have the dynamic text field vertical orientated. Don't forget to embed the fonts.
