Layers Following Mousepointer?

I've got an image of a floorplan of the ground floor of a building. There are image maps over four of the rooms and Show/Hide Layer events setup in Dreamweaver. The four layers are set to be hidden, and when you mouseover a map the relevent layer appears. It dissapears when you mouseout. So far so good. That works. The problem comes in the positioning when the browser is resized and what not. One way round it I thought would be to have the layers work in exactly the same way but to position them to follow the mousepointer. What would happen here then? I reckon all four layers would follow the pointer and just show or hide in the same way as if they were static. Fair enough. Now how do I do it? Hmmmm.....problem methinks.
Any ideas anyone? It needs to be as cross-browser compatible as is inhumanly possible.

Thanks in advance

well, it is possbile but not with css. you have to use javascript. and being this is a cross-platform you will not get it here. I will move this to the client side forum.
