Greets, folks.
Long-time reader, short-time member and addicted lurker.
I recently snagged Dedicated server for use with my own little Projects. This is not a fly-by-night server.
I'll be left with a lot of room on this server and am offering a few slots to anyone interested.
There are no catches. This is completely free. You EMail or PM me your domain name and a username you want, you'll get back a password and login info (which you can then change)
Server info:
2Ghz, 1G mem, 120g Disk.
Apache 2.2.6
PHP 5.2.5 (Custom compiled, hate packed versions)
suPHP (to avoid permissions issues)
Ruby 1.8.6 w/ Rails 2.0.2
Python 2.5
PERL 5.8.8 w/ almost every lib (that I could think of).
MySQL 5.0.45
PostreSQL 8.2.5
Limited shell access if you need it (jailed). Those who I deem trustworthy will get unjailed shell access.
Just PM me, or whatever.
I also have a Virtual Dedicated server for all my Bleeding Edge stuff, though it's going to get bombed soon so I can clean it up.
I'm just a geek looking to give back to a very helpful, friendly community.

ew, no thanks. it's nice of you though.
where's it located? does it have Cpanel on it?

It's in AZ.
I utilize PLESK as the CP since I've had experience with PLESK since ~1998.
I can't stand cPanel.
Why ew?

eh, i dunno ... from the things i've heard, i'd hesitate to use Go Daddy for anything other than domains. and even then, i wouldn't use them for domains - i'd use namecheap.
what can't you stand about cPanel?
i've never used plesk... just tried their demo, but meh, i'm already familiar with cpanel.
btw, cpanel isn't the greatest unless it's running either the x3 theme or RVSkins.

cPanel is convoluted at best.
PLESK has just the features I absolutely need. Anything else I can deal with on my own based upon my extensive experience. I'm a fan of lazy, hence the control panel.
I've never had trouble with Go Daddy. Been with them for almost 2 years. YMMV. Everyone has a different experience. Servers are quick, support is responsive to issues, etc.
Don't knock it til you try it ;)

Bumping this up as, surprisingly, no one has shown any interest.

The post has only been up for about 30 hours. Please don't bump it. If no one is interested it's for one of two reasons. 1) they already have adequate hosting, or 2) they haven't seen the thread yet.

i'm still torn as to whether i should take you up on that offer or not. i mean, my current hosting is pretty cheap and i haven't hit my 500MB space limit (yet) and my bandwidth allowance of 50GB is more than i'll ever need. also, i've dreamed of running a web hosting company, and i'm thinking that's probably the only reason i'd ever need a dedicated server ... but at this point i don't think i could even run one on a dedicated server cuz i'm no expert at being a linux admin.
not only that, i'd want to be able to use cpanel for my hosting company ;)
so i dunno... whatcha think?

Well, I can't really give you sound advice as far as the business side of things goes..
When it comes to hosting solutions, the vast majority of users aren't server-savy, and cPanel isn't a terribly friendly server control panel.
Take a look at cPanel from the view of your average, every day user. It's complicated and, by default, pretty ugly.
PLESK has the advantage of being quite simple, decent looking (Think of Joe Blows average desktop) and 'friendly' to the general user.
As far as administrative stuff.. PLESK and cPanel-based servers are generally fairly self-sufficient. Just have to know how/when to update things. I'd happy to teach you some administrative stuff on my Virtual Dedicated server since it's purely for messing around/breaking/blowing stuff up.
And you're more than welcome to take me up on the hosting.

Sorry about the earlier bump, forgot how long ago I had made the post and didn't bother looking. My bad!

Not sure I know what you mean by free domains.
If you can point DNS, then sure.

People who actually post on the forums very infrequently but have been members for quite a while - much like myself. Been viewing this site for a number of years, only recently started posting.
That's the general definition of a lurker.
