Okay, so I've been hired to update a friend's site and they've given me all the FTP information but I am denied to log into their account at a site the claim to have signed up for their domain at. How do you find out where their domain is registered (where I should be using the log in information). Thanks

You can usually find out the server the web site is on by doing a tracert in your command prompt. Go to start > run and type cmd then hit enter. In the command prompt type tracert domain.com. The last hop with give you the server name of the provider who you can then contact to find out how you can log in to the web site as each provider will have different login methods.

So if you do tracert htmlforums.com for example you will get something similar to this:

Tracing route to htmlforums.com [66.225.226.42]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

The last hop would be unknown.ord.scnet.net so you can assume they are hosted at scnet.net which technically isn't true in this case but this should work for most small web sites.

If this doesn't work a simpler way would be to look in the whois information under the nameservers used.
