a while back i started a little internet radio station on live365.com so that i could listen to my favourite mp3s from work. my husband made a file on my domain called unidentity.pls (http://unidentity.net/unidentity.pls) which, when clicked, opens winamp and starts playing my radio station. i'm guessing it does absolutely no good if you do not have winamp installed.

anyway, my domain went down for a little while (that happens when you don't pay the bill), and then got moved to one of the dedicated servers used by the isp where i work. now, i don't think the link works. i can't check right now because at home i have linux, no winamp afaik. last time that i checked from work, it just brought this up:

[playlist]
File1=http://64.152.82.73:17488
Title1=unidentity.net's favourite songs
Length1=-1
NumberOfEntries=1
Version=2

i have a few questions:

does the link work for any of you who have winamp?
this (http://www.live365.com/stations/258377) is the direct link to my station on live365. if the .pls file doesn't work for you, does that work? (shouldn't need winamp for this page, afaik).
if the station on live365 works, but my .pls file does not, then something is wrong with it, correct? it's the exact same file that was working before the move. what can i do to make it work again? would it involve making changes to the file or to the server?
is there another way to do the playlist file so that other players will recognize it, specifically xmms?

wow! (i hate to say it, but i'm going to have to hold off answering your question untill i make it home... the proxy server and firewall i'm behind might be preventing me from viewing it now)

as for streaming the mp3's from your server, you might want to consider using SHOUTCAST. It's a part of winamp and can be configured with unlimited ammounts of tracks, but beware, it does require a large ammount of bandwidth for each listener!

i should have a better responce for you in another 4-5 hours when i make it home.

wow.... I used to listen to live365 a while back. Ha!

Anyway, everything worked for me, but noted: I chose winamp (I have it installed) but it streamed through realplayer. I could not see the playlist.

see, i can't stream my mp3s *from* my server. i'm not allotted that much bandwidth. that's why i have a live365 account.

i couldn't get my station to play at all at home last night. not through the link on my site, or through live365 itself. xmms kept saying it couldn't open the location.

help?

i made it to it last night! the pls link did work for me, but kept playing one song only. when i clicked the link for the live365, it also worked, but again... kept playing 1 song only. after the second playing of the song i think i fell over on the floor and slept for an hour or so... when i awoke, same song, still active (no lyrics, just instramental)

i'm thinking there is something holding you back from listening (possibly firewall at work) there is 1 other loop hole around this! i know sonicnet.com works with an applet that even makes it threw the firewall at my workplace. you might consider running the files that way.

hope it helps!
