selecting objects [photoshop]

there seem to be several methods to select a portion of an image and cut out the background. What's the most effective way to do it? I used to use the magic wand for a while, and now I use the polygonal lasso, but it's still hard to get it right.

Depends on the object. If it's got clean edges, you can use the pen tool to create a path, then convert that to a selection. If it's a complex edge (like hair or fur), you can use the extract filter, although it takes a bit of practice.

And, of course, the magic wand and lasso are fine tools, too, depending on circumstances.
