FTP and mail in WHM

I dont really know an appropriate forum for this so I'll put it here :P

I purchased a dedicated server from LT, and I managed to put together an account without breaking anything. I can login to cpanel etc fine, upload files, add domains blah blah everything I could on my shared hosting.

FTP doesn't seem to want to work.

I use the same user/pass as my cpanel account, but that happens each time. I've heard about using port 990, but that comes back with something along the lines of being refused. Any other combinations of anything (non SSL, different ports etc) come back with
[18:01:33] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

The other problem is mail (setting it up with thunderbird). I don't really know where to start with this :/ (at least on the WHM side of things). Annny help on that would be awesome (steps, tutorials etc)

I have, they just referred me to the cpanel docs (which don't help at all). problem is the server is self-managed. Just wondering if anyone else knew how to do it, or at least knew of some resources aside from the flash tutorials that every host has a copy of.

edit: ok, FTP is working, SmartFTP didn't wanna work

Yeah, I have been having a lot of problems with smart FTP. Connections time out on me when uploading a few images and this happens on different servers, both linux and windows. I hope they get it fixed, I am using CuteFTP for the time being.
