I have to order parts for and build two linux servers for work. We always use fedora, but this time I want to try Gentoo. I have an old pentium II thats been sitting collecting dust for almost a year so I installed Gentoo on it today to try it out.

The install took quite a while but went well - I stayed late as I wanted to see how it worked and hopefully get it networked so I could play with it from home.

I got it done rebooted it tried to log in and forgot the password I had just set an hour earlier

While the install took much longer than Fedora I really liked the fine grained control over what was happening and (after getting the password back and learning it more) will most likely use it in the future.

That's excellent to hear (( that you like it )).

Another Operating System that's actually mainly used for servers, is Debian. It does not compile everything from scratch as Gentoo does, but it's not really much slower in my opinion. The install can take under an hour, even with all the packages updated (( depending on your net connection.. )). I have used Gentoo for a long while, but installing an application and updating the server can and WILL take a long time, and during that time, performance will decrease a lot. I would suggest Debian, which really just works, and the .deb package system is quick and works perfectly :) You will learn it quickly, and the install allows you to select stuff like SAMBA webserver and APACHE to let it configure automaticly whilst you are drinking your tea - much easier, and quicker. Debian VS Gentoo in one sentence: Gentoo is slow when installing/upgrading/changing anything, where Debian can do the same as Gentoo, just doesn't compile from scratch, which is good for a servers efficiency.

Yes took me about 4 hours just to get an empty genoo system up and running, now I'm about 30 minutes into getting mysql installed and can see it taking the rest of the week just to get ready for a web server.

That's why Debian is preferable sometimes... more software, quicker installs, etc.. But, it's all up to you!

Gentoo x86 Installation Guide. Gentoo x86 Installation Guide. As of 2004.0, the individual architecture-specific installation guides have been obsoleted in favor of the new (and extended) Gentoo Handbook.
