Ok, so i've got to find out about windows operating systems, and I don't know the difference between windows 3.1 and windows NT 3.1 for example- could somebody please explain it to me - and also explain about what exactly NT is.

Also, when talking about Windows NT, would it be acceptable to talk about Windows 2000, Windows server 2003 and Windows XP as NT operating systems?

Don't quote me on this, but I think Win 2K and Win XP were both built on what M/S called the "NT Framework". I think it's something to do with the core of the OS - maybe the kernel?

I'm really not sure about this - that's my first idea though

More to do with moving to NTFS (New Technology File System) from File Allocation Table (FAT).

read these,

Basicly, 'New Technology'

Bad name, for as soon as it's outdated, what then?

actually, the NT thing has been named many things from "Network Technology" to "Nearly There"...

What you had, back in the middle ages of computer OS (ie, the 1990s) was two branches of Windows - Windows 3.1 was for standalone computers (although it did support email and internet, it wasn't really built for networking)... NT was a more resilient, robust, and networkable solution - and was the choice for server PCs.

The problem was, while both branches looked the same (especially Win95 and NT4), there was a lot of differences in the background - making it a nightmare for MS to continue developing and supporting...

The first well-received attempt to consolidate the two was Windows 2000 - although there were problems (some of the games that used directx would not work, for example).

XP is further along the integrated kernel (the guts of the OS), and Vista is pretty much there...

NT is dead. I think it is kind of late to ask this question :)

NT is not dead - it is very much a part of XP...

Well, Xp should be dead

why? just because you have fallen to the Linux propaganda machine?

Neither OS is better than the other - they perform differently for different functionalities.

However, I agree that variation of OS is important, and I'm happy that there is a growing Linux usage out there, because homogeniiety is never good in computing or anything else for that matter...

Lighten up, Paul!

That,,, my friend, was a bad attempt at humor. I don't hate Microsoft, or Windows. I quite think it's a good OS, but just not for me :) No worries, I am not an evil Linux person ;)

who's Paul?

I didn't mean to seem snippy, but I get fed up of hearing the same ol' arguments from everyone when all it comes down to is they do things differently to get the same results...

All I know is that I'm using XP and I'm very well happy with it.

<h1>, poor thing :( :D

I have tried both windows for many years, and then Linux for all of a few months. Now, it took severals years to switch over to Linux for only a month, to see how terrible windows was in the first place. Bah, people may like it, but I've seen both, and I only like one of 'em.
