So, you have drug the old 300mhz machine out of the closet, dusted it off, and are ready to have a tinker toy? This is what you are going to need...
My best recomendation would be to make a small LAN. Dont scream and pull your hair out, just be calm and willing to ask questions! (we'll go into setup of a LAN later)
Once the network is running, and your Web Server is just sitting there, nothing installed... it's time to make a check list!
1. NT or 2000 OS (I personaly like the 2000)
2. Option Pack 3 (depending on your OS, review here (http://support.microsoft.com/support/iis/install/install_iis4.asp))
3. Option Pack 6 or 6a (it depends on what you can find)
4. IIS LATEST VERSION
5. PERL Latest Version (http://www.cpan.org/)
6. A final decision on the Machine Name www is sometimes a well liked one on a small test LAN, because the replacement of code in your files is much easier!
7. How about PHP (http://www.php.net)
8. You will also need something like MySQL (too many options to list for this one!)
9. (ok, so you can laugh at me here, but having another person around can really help!) Call one of your quake budds and have them work on this thing too! Production will happen faster, and a better understanding will come with shared ideas!(OOOO And dont forget the forums for help also!)
Todays basic options include enabled SSI, Javascript, and some other things you will likely forget.
SOON, we will work on mutiple IP addressing for seperate webs on the same server!
HAVE FUN WITH IT!
