I want to encourage everyone to keep their "old" PC! You can learn more with it then you ever thought possible!
Test servers are some of the greatest things in the world. you can format and install a base copy of your favorite server OS, install IIS or Apache, and have hours of mind boggling options. In most cases, we have all tried to work with something like the MS Personal Web Server... Bad Idea! (in my opinion) An installation like this will get you some options for javascript, but when it comes to getting your site to work in a test area first... severl things can go wrong all based on the lack of a great server setup.
I know what you are thinking, what's the big deal? "You install an OS/option pack/IIS and the server is done..." WRONG! Updates to each of these services (IIS and Apache) Require standard maintenance and updates. If every job dealing with a server was simply "install the software, and hang it in the rack" the world would be a Wonderful place! But the demands of most employeers for their Web's require matching their needs, while keeping the current items, scripts, and programs running without DOWN TIME!
Have fun with it, and KEEP THAT "OLD" PC!
