thanks for looking at this,

what exactly are content management systems, e.g. Drupal. And what do they do? do i need one? thanks, any info given will be helpful :)

They are used as a means of updating and adding content to a website without the need to have any coding knowledge or experience. Specific areas of a "master" page are targetted, and displayed in the CMS system as input text boxes (see screenshot examples attached to this post). It also allows for documents to be added to the website, and then linked on existing or new pages created.

We have one for our company website, so when I'm not around and something needs doing, my colleagues are able to make the necessary changes.

The Macromedia Studio comes with one called Contribute, and there are many out there such as Joomla!

They are mainly implemented when a design company create a website for somebody with no coding knowledge, but this person/company wish to add and amend the content of the website themselves.
