View Full Version : Linux Server Hard Disk died...
So aparently the hard drive on my RAQ550 server died. Friend said that its because of a bad sector in somewhere where it reads the boot sequence.
My question is if and how you can mount a Linux hard drive onto a Windows PC and retrieve data therefrom. If this is impossible, how do you do it from a Linux box?
any help would be most appreciated. Info, tips, sources, all would be usefull.
Thanks again,
Tham.

I would boot a system rescue CD, which are small Linux distributions meant for this purpose. Here are two:
SystemRescueCD (http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page)
(R)ecovery (I)s (P)ossible Linux rescue system (http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/)
In answer to your first question, there is the Ext2 Installable File System For Windows (http://www.fs-driver.org/) which claims to mount Linux ext2 and ext3 file systems on Windows for both reading and writing. I haven't tried it.

I have tried it with Windows XP Professional, and a no-go for me. I was looking forward to it too! Gah :P It would read the drive sizes, but it ended there.
