update ur gmail

i found this really strange...
i notice that some of my mates gmail interfaces looked slightly different to mine, like an updated gmail with gtalk all integrated. One of my friends me showed how to upgrade and thought this might be useful to some...
simply change ur language settings to english (us) and whatyaknow...gmail upgraded
no other way of doing this i dont think....what is google trying to say here ;)

I read somewhere that they (being american and all) try out everything in "english (us)" and implement the functions later on in the other languages once they're ready. I don't know though..

It didn't work when my brother tried, he never got the "Gtalk is here" screen.. Don't know why.. *shrug*

It's a pretty cool function, but I don't really use it. I don't like it being that integrated with the browser. If i'm browsing with another tab, I get no signal that someone wrote me, like in msnm for instance..

The interface changes slightly again if you set up you Google Calendar. I have noticed that it takes a bit for the added functionality to show up, maybe your language setting thing will force the change through faster.

i was expecting it to change over time as well but a couple months later i was still stuck on the same ol gmail. It's funny cos my language settings were english (uk)...u would have thought they would have implemeneted the interface to at least that setting first right? try it for urself...select english (uk) and gmail switches back to old interface...maybe they just pssed at the whole english gmail dealio with being forced to swith to googlemail and not gmail..who knows.....but u would also think they could just add an option in the settings sections, or even better, just upgrade all the languages...like what are they waiting for? (how 'hard' can it be) My mate had to send a whole bunch of emails to google, aparently huge mission, to find out how to change the interface.....

Yes, the Weasel told me about this thing.. Really wierd, that you just have a 'worse' interface in other languages, and no-one tells you.. :burnt:

Yeah I've heard about that. It's just because they test all new features on google.com and all the US sites, so why not do the same in gmail, and just use the language setting to determine the features. But yeah, they need to be faster implementing new features in other regions...
