I am quite a PC tweaker, I must admit. I recently found an XP tweaking guide, which is 174 pages long, but has a nice index, so you can use only what you want to use.

You know that XP bootloader? (see image)
The blue bar that crosses there, now only passes ONCE on my PC, and my Pc is up and running completely in under 40 seconds. It does take some time though, but if you want performance out of your PC, this is for you :)

http://ynetjapan.at.infoseek.co.jp/pict/xp_boot.gif
The before discussed bootloader

Now, what the main thing is, is this; you stop all the things you don't need. Did you ever really need that automatic updates service coming up at the most annoying time telling you you need this update? NO.
Did you ever need remote desktop sharing to automaticly start, instead of you starting it yourself? NO.
Do you ever use Windows Messenger instead of MSN Messenger? NO.

All these things - and more - you can safely stop, so your PC can be much quicker. I have noticed that my PC is about double as quick at doing most things now, thank it was before.
Here are my specs:
********************************************************************
* Processor: AMD Athlon XP 1500+ (1.29 Ghtz) *
* RAM: 512 MB DDR Ram (unknown cheap brand) *
* GFX card: Geforce FX5200 128 mb AGP *
*********************************************************************

That is NOT good specifications, and one of my mates visited recently with his AMD Athlon 3200+ 64 bit CPU and 1 GB RAM and booted up SLOWER than me.

Do you want this? Then download PDF document in the below link (it was too big (2 mb) to attach..) :)

I hope this'll help someone get a great PC. If anyone would like it, I will rewrite this, so it is nicer to read, and gets read by more :D

Oh goodie, I have someone who wants to try ^^

:D

REMEMBER: Make some sort of backup, whether it be a system restore (which the guide tells you how to deactivate ;) ) or a complete HDD backup. Unless you don't think you will crap up, and you can accept the consequence if you do :P

Good luck with it!
** returns to his trusty Gentoo Linux ** :lol:

You could also get some toys off the manufacturers;

*btw: my pc boots up in under 40 seconds anyway :P

Oh, but then you can boot in less :D

It is all depending on hardware.
Boot your XP completely in under 40 seconds.
Note the under ;)
My PC could take up to two minutes, but if you tweak it, you can get it faster, like I did. The thing that takes me the most of the time, if for my BIOS to run through :P

It works, but honestly, i doesn't really matter. Nice though, good find :D

Also, tips on system restore, set it to save everyday, system restore has saved me almost 10 times already :D

Nice find Nox. I've made a lot of the tweaks you mention myself, but shall read the document to see if I can speed it up even more. My PC boots in about a minute at the moment.

It's on my other HDD :)

I use XP for modding my Motorola E398 Mobile Phone :D

Other than that, I use Linux. Oh, and I wrote this small guide after tweaking my XP for gaming just before a LAN party :P
