OK I have a server set up on my G5 at home.... It is not an X-Serve, just a regular G5... I am trying to set up my FTP services so that I can upload and download from it... I installed pure-FTPd and the puer-FTPd Manager..... I computer sits behind a router and I have port 21 open and a port range of 20000:30000 (the port range is also configed in the manager)... I have my users and my FTP virtual hosts set up through the manager... Now when I try to FTP to any of my domains I get this error message back:
server said:
Could not open data connection to port 21060:
Operation timed out
Error -160: could not start data transfer

I am using Transmit v. 3.2.1...... Can any one help me????

I am experiencing more or less the same problem but when I try to upload from outside the router the window says ' Connection Refused'. I have set all the settings correctly when installing FTPd Manager and my router is enabled for FTP service (or so I'm thought to think).
My Router is a NetGear DG834G and I am running a G4 powerbook (which I am intending to use as the FTP server) and a G4 imac.
I know this doesn't answer your querie but I was just wondering if you have solved your problem since and maybe can help me???

All the best,
Sal

Are you sure your software firewall couldn't be a problem? I would try disabling the firewall for a few minutes whilst testing, but, remember to activate it again. If not, the router is, most likely, set up incorrectly, or the software.

Please come with more details if you have any :)
