I am trying to figure out the best route to go for a vertical, image only, navigation menu. DHTML, CSS, Java.... I want a method that will work with IE and Firefox. Anything else really wont matter to much as my site wont be visted by the resolution, graphical, or odd browser challenged. Any advice is most appreciated. This is what I am trying to do and please note I do not know any of the three languages above. Just getting it done, versus perfection, is all that matters:

DHTML would be your best bet.
Try searching http://www.dynamicdrive.com/ for any pre-made navigation systems like the one you want, they should have a few examples.

Oh, this brings back nightmares. :P I remember trying to make my own menu--it had a similar layout, except that the images change when there's a mouseover in addition to the subMenus. I survived using CSS (with only a touch of JavaScript since IE is a little disabled).
For simplicity's sake, however, I suppose DHTML would be your best bet. If you knew that all of your visitors have JavaScript enabled, there are plenty of scripts for subMenus in JavaScript (it just takes some searching).
I'd suggest http://www.hotscripts.com/ if DynamicDrive doesn't produce results...
