They've been taking some incredibly bad hits in the last few weeks, but it would appear to be pretty well-deserved...

Comments like the following indicate a very poor understanding of the concerns of the public:
a company executive dismissed the concerns stating that "most people don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it"
I did not know what a rootkit was before this case came to light, but I do now, and I know it isn't good...

I hope that that executive is given a suitable punishment for his rather shallow remark.

It's quite interesting to read the rap sheet against Sony now - especially as they appear to have breached the copyright and licence of an open-source program... rather ironic, don't you feel?

If you have purchased one of these CD's recently - don't worry, because there is recourse now that Sony have made formal apologies and announcements:

First off is that Amazon are granting refunds for XCP CD's:

The full list of affected albums is at:

And Sony are offering a simple direct exchange:

Looks like the nibble at the end of the line wasn't a sucker, it was a shark. Sony's gonna have a heck of a time reeling this one into the boat before it sinks.

The full list of affected albums is at:
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.htmlthat full list doesn't seem to be very full, with only some 50ish albums in it (not that i know how many albums are in fact infected with the protection - wouldn't surprise me if it goes beyond sony)..

one thing i noticed about the protected albums.. the artists/bands (at least from what i could see) aren't targeting the audience that you normally see downloading the music, which is odd.. i guess artists like eminem or whoever'stoppingthecharts could have done better with the protection, but i assume he's not on sony (for instance). there's quite a few bandsin the list that i never heard of before, and doubtly will ever listen to, but.. *shrug*

it's almost as bad as with copyprotected games, where they break some sectors of the disk and/or install some fake drivers for your cd/dvd player (if it'd detect you running a robbed copy) which'd possibly render your player useless..

tss..

Now, I believbe that Interscope is columbia. Eminem is Columbia> Interscope>Aftermath>Shady Records

What is funny, is that People are still gonna find a way to make copies of a cd or something..

It wouldn't surprise me if hackers decided to get back at that company by hacking its site. I'm not advocating it, but it's not something that would surprise me.
