I just signed on with charge.com - and I had hunted and read up on so many charge acceptance sites I was lost in cyberspace for a long time..lol. They did have the best prices I could find, but it still costs. There are some monthly fees on top of fees off each sale but their fees were the lowest I could find. It takes some time though - took a little over five weeks for me before everything was good to go.
Otherwise I stumbled onto one I used in the meantime called propay that is free - except they would take a percentage off each sale, of course. But you can sign up for free. the only hitch is that you have to send whomever wishes to purchase something an e-mail with a secure link. I signed up for it while awaiting the process with charge.com and no one seemed interested, but it depends what your needs are. If you want to look that free one over, it's at https://epay.propay.com/index2.html
Good luck - I know what an ordeal this can be!

May I please know how much you paid to set up your merchant's account, JustJeni?
If one is looking for a simple 3rd party processor, try Revecom.com. Have heard nothing but good about them.

Charge.com is a merchant account, I suggest buying the charge box (which they host) for a flat fee of $200, rather than their monthly, which is something like $20 for 3 years. The benefit of a merchant account is that you are only paying a very small percentage for a fee.
You can always go with a non-merchant billing system, like ccbill or ibill, but then you will be paying 15-20%.
