Hello,

I've got a couple problems with my pop3 server, both having to do with attachments. We have a couple domain names and mailbox on our server (in the office network behind a router) which are fmsdesign.com and lexingtonmarketing.ca. We've been experiencing difficulty with receiving attachments on a few accounts. These difficulties can be broken down into 2 problems:

1) dgraham@fmsdesign.com cannot send attachments to gshah@fmsdesign.com, reception@fmsdesign.com, nor gibran@lexingtonmarketing.ca. dgraham@fmsdesign.com CAN send attachments to her home email account and to my telus account. If there is no attachment, her emails come through on ALL accounts (including the ones listed above). If there is an attachment, not even the email body comes through on the ones listed above.

2) On a few occasions, we've had people try to send attachments to dgraham@fmsdesign.com and harnold@lexingtonmarketing.ca and their email application said that the attachment was too big to send. The files weren't that big (no more than 5 MB), and these 2 accounts have never even come close to their quota (100 MB). Someone was suggesting to me that it might be the "pipe size" or "throughput capacity". I've never heard of such a thing and I wouldn't know where to start looking for it. Is this something that's set in each person's account on the server, something on the server generically, something to do with our ISP, something to do with our router? What is "pipe size" and how can I configure it? Could it be something other than pipe size?

Thanks so much for your help.

Actually I've narrowed down the problem quite a bit. I big part of the problem is the 2.0 MB limit my pop3 service seems to have setup by default (which I didn't know about). Anything over 2.0MB doesn't get through. There are also problems with the files on the sender's computer (they seem to be changing size somewhere between the sender and receiver). Does anyone know how to increase the size limit (or get rid of it all together)? I'm using the standard pop3 service that comes with Windows Server 2003 Web Edition (the one you have to installed through "Add/Remove windows Components").

As for the log file, I'm not sure where to find it. I know where the OS keeps its log files, but I don't know under which folder and the log file names aren't incredibly informative (ex050727.log isn't that meaningful to me). I also know how to use the Event Viewer, but out of the categories of "Applications", "Security", and "System" I see nothing relating to pop3 services. Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

are you refereing to a about the sizes changing? in transfer the file size is 1/3 + bigger as it is encoded to be transfered.

You can launch the POP3 manager from manage my computer in the admin tools on program menu. there you will find all the settings you would like.

The event log ex050727.log are means extended w3c log file. 7/27/05 and the information contained in the log is invaluable.

Yes, I am able to open the pop3 service, but there is nothing in there for increasing attachment sizes. Is there I file I can modify?

yes most of the windows administration is modifiying properties. you must right click the node of the pop3 service and set the options there.
